Sponsor a Cat

Temples vary with cat populations. Wat Nai Yang and Wat Pah Khlok have at least 30 each.

It would be fair to say that most temples have a large population of cats as well as dogs, usually over 30. Kittens are regularly dumped at temples and unfortunately usually at an age when they should still be with their mothers which makes their survival rate quite low.

They tend to live in groups at various locations in the temple

Whole Temple Sponsorships

We currently have no full temple sponsorships to offer, but please watch out for new temples which will be coming soon.

Individual Cat Sponsorships

The cats below are at Wat Pah Khlok has a large population of cats, between 30 and 40. They all live in large groups around the monks' chalets. One monk in particular is very fond of his group and always calls us if anything is wrong. A recent outbreak of sneezing and coughing saw no less than 12 of them ferried to the vets for treatment. Fortunately it was not cat flu and all seem to be recovering. One small kitten did have pneumonia and unfortunately died at the clinic. We are currently treating some for eye problems, but generally they are quite a healthy group. The cats and dogs here coexist very well, and the cats have no fear at all of the dogs, who they regularly chase away if they dare to encroach on their territory.

All these cats live at Wat Pah Khlok. They live around one of the monks little houses, who fortunately does care about them and contacts us if they are in need of treatment. SDF supplies food to the monk to feed them. There are about 20 at this one house alone

Not all of the cats have been named. if you would like to sponsor one please let us know what you'd like to call your sponsored cat. Thank you for your support!

Generally monks are more tolerant of cats than dogs and some monks keep a few as pets, though generally don't do anything if they fall ill. Many others though have to fight for any food they get, and in most temples live along side the dogs, usually harmoniously.

SDF volunteers feed cats and check on their health regularly in exactly the same way as they do dogs. Mange in particular is a problem and usually affects the cats head. If found in time mange is easy to heal. We sterilise and vaccinate them as soon as they are old enough. (Kittens get dumped the same as puppies, often left in sacks.) Volunteers who look after temples regularly de-flea and check for injuries.

When mature enough kittens are taken to our clinics for sterilisation.

Providing a sack of high quality cat food per month will ensure that they at least get some high protein food which cats need to remain healthy. A 10kg sack of good quality cat food such as Whiskas pockets costs approximately 480 Thai Baht. This is enough to feed all the cats at a particular temple for a week, (In most cases about 20/30 cats), as they also get leftover scraps from the monks.
These photos show a kitten exhibiting the first signs, and an adult cat we found at a temple with advanced mange that had almost destroyed its ears. In the latter case the cat had to be taken to a local clinic and it's ears were removed. There was a happy ending though in that the cat was adopted and is now a pampered if somewhat overweight house cat!
