How to Adopt a Soi Dog

Thank you for considering saving the life of a dog in need.  There are two ways to get your dog to you: travelling by cargo or with a passenger (a flight volunteer) as their extra baggage. We take care of all the documents, flights, and other arrangements - you only need to go to an international airport to meet your new best friend. Our adoptions staff will walk you through the process. Please read about our costs to send your dog to your part of the world.

If you're interested in adopting, please complete Soi Dog’s adoption questionnaire and we will contact you soon.

Please note that Soi Dog charges no adoption fee. Adopters are responsible only for the necessary costs to get the dog from Thailand to your home.

All Soi Dogs are sterilized, vaccinated, and microchipped as a matter of course.

Travelling by cargo is generally more expensive than flying as accompanied baggage depending on country and airline but has the advantage that the dog can fly at your convenience. There is no difference in the way the dog is transported. For UK only please see our special notes below.

Flying as accompanied baggage with a flight volunteer is entirely dependent on the availability of persons willing to take the dog as accompanied baggage and there may be considerable delay in completing the adoption. Our adoptions team will advise if any flight volunteers are available or become available during the waiting process

Why not consider combining a holiday in Thailand with taking your adopted dog back to your home country. The savings involved can mean a very cheap holiday.

UK - travelling with a flight volunteer includes the required blood test analysis, travel to the UK, Ruffwear Webmaster harness and the flight cage.

UK

Owing to high costs of cargo clearance and it not being possible to send dogs directly to the UK by air as accompanied baggage. SDF operates a volunteer scheme whereby flight volunteers fly to or from Thailand by KLM via Amsterdam. This requires each volunteer to carry the maximum number of dogs allowed by the airline (Three) at the special rate of $200 US per dog. In addition to this are the overnight costs in the Netherlands, the ferry charges to Harwich and the domestic flights from Phuket to Bangkok. This is an arduous process for the volunteers and in return the adopters pay the return travel costs for the volunteers. Volunteers must spend on average 10 days for a minimum of 2 hours per day becoming familiar with the dogs as they will be not caged during their time in the Netherlands. Volunteers accommodation and other costs are paid by the volunteers themselves and they can stay in Thailand or the UK for as long as they wish, providing they spend the minimum required time at the shelter. The total cost using this method is currently 745GBP including flight crates, blood tests and a Ruffwear harnesses. This is less than half the average cost of sending by cargo. Volunteers are welcome to apply but must be physically fit and able to handle 3 dogs simultaneously on leashes. The dogs safety is our prime concern.

Australia & New Zealand

Adopting a dog to Australia and New Zealand is a longer process and costs several thousand dollars. This is due to the countries' strict quarantine requirements. Animals need to spend time in a foster home in an approved country (which includes almost all Western countries and Singapore and Malaysia), and then travel from there to Australia or New Zealand, where they spend 10 days in a quarantine facility. We can generally arrange a foster home.
