The Dog In The Crate
The story of Chok Dee (formerly Haan) and his rehoming to America as told in a poem by Diana Thurbon...
THE DOG IN THE CRATE
by Diana Thurbon
The brown dog fills his hospital cage,
Twists round, turns his head, and grins at me.
I push a liver treat gently through the bars.
He gulps, and grateful grins again, I see!
I find another - we could do this all day.
I notice bandages wound round his legs,
“What’s wrong with him?” I softly say.

Reggie replies, “He has cuts, a broken back.”
“Can they?” “No! The vets can't fix his spine:
hit by a car - he drags along the concrete track.
The nerves in his back will never align.”
So, he'll never walk. I'm in a Buddhist place
I know he will be cared for - allowed to live.
I pass a second treat; see the smiling face
again; gobbling gulping grinning. -
As I sprawl beside his cage, rub silk ears,
I see tomorrows sadly – my Spirit spinning.
I visit him again. I'm filled with fears,
But the dog is in his present moment,
His eyes sparkle though his tail is still
He licks my hand; joyful spit, but I lament.
Sometimes souls forge strong connections;
There is no turning - no walking away,
Putting bits of life in forgotten sections. -
And I have seen a place on another day,
a sanctuary - where lame pets run free.
I'll find a place like that - I know I will.
I whisper, “You will run, you will see.”
Worth the strife and struggle - every bit.
So many donate. It's soon now that he will fly
Legs sprawled in front he will somehow sit
in his airline crate. Sleepy eyes - a sigh.
He cannot know, that his wheels await -
That soon he will play, have fun and run.
But I know he will, and I know it's great.
