The Story Of Orphan Annie...

Annie became an orphan after her mother and four brothers and sisters were poisoned at a Burmese labour camp on the island. Fortunately for her, Annie was the runt of the litter and not strong enough to eat any of the poisoned bait before her stronger but still severely malnourished siblings hungrily devoured it. This saved her life. She is now at the Soi Dog shelter frightened and alone. Annie is one of the dogs who, for obvious reasons can never be returned to where she was found. After being alerted by a concerned person Khun Nok, one of Soi Dog's dog catchers went to the labour camp. He found Orphan Annie alone and frightened cuddling against her dead mother. 

The photo below on the left was taken by Nok at the scene. Annie can be seen in under the car, wondering what is wrong with her mum. Despite his many years witnessing atrocities Nok said this was one of the saddest things he had ever seen.

One of her legs was broken and although it would have healed on its own it would have been permanently deformed. Annie was sent to a specialist surgeon where a plate was inserted. This will certainly give her a better quality of life. The cost for the surgery was 4,000 Thai Baht.

Amazingly a regular Australian visitor to Phuket came up to visit the shelter yesterday, saw Annie and burst into tears. She had been feeding Annie's family at the entrance to the labour camp and been looking for her for the past 3 days.
