Distemper Crisis Looming For Rescued Dogs…

Only With Your Support Can These Dogs Be Saved

Dear Friends and Supporters of Soi Dog,

I wrote to you last month telling you of Bo, Nakhon and Phanom 3 of the thousands of dogs rescued from the dog meat trade. All 3 had lost limbs at the hands of the smugglers. Dogs who fall victim to the dog meat trade are crammed often 12 to a cage with the cages stacked one on top of the other and dog's limbs are often crushed beyond recognition.

Nakhon and Phanom were both brought to Soi Dog’s shelter and will soon fly to homes in the United States. However, it is with great sadness that I have to inform you that little Bo has passed away, the victim of a quickly developing distemper epidemic. Having gone through so much and with a new home awaiting in the US she lost her battle with the deadly distemper virus that is now sweeping through the Nakhon Phanom livestock center. Over 1,000 rescued dogs arrived there just this week putting further pressure, on the already overcrowded center. With the seasonal monsoon now hitting the region, the conditions are even worse than before.

Even as I write to you volunteers from Bangkok have driven all night to Nakhon Phanom to collect some of the more vulnerable dogs like Whitey here (obviously a stolen pet) and are bringing them back to Soi Dog Bangkok in the hope of finding them homes.

Over 30 dogs have died from distemper in just the past few days, the situation is urgent and your help is needed now!

Vaccines are desperately needed now or more dogs like Bo will fall victim to this insidious disease! 1,500 vaccines have already been purchased at a cost of over $5,000 and are being rushed to the shelter. Soi Dog is putting together a team of volunteers to assist the overstretched staff at the shelter to help administer the first dose of vaccine for each dog. The dogs will need 3 doses at 2 week intervals to fully protect them and we have received a request to supply 4,000 additional vaccinations for the shelter at Nakhon Phanom as well as other shelters at Buriram and Khemmarat. We are contacting drug companies to see if they will donate or at least heavily discount the vaccines, but at present we have to buy at the normal price.

This is truly a life or death situation for these dogs! It is too late to save them all but we cannot stand back and see a repeat of last year when all but around 80 dogs died out of nearly 2,000 rescued from a dog meat trafficker’s holding center in the space of just 6 months.

Caring for the well over 5,000 dogs in government shelters is well beyond Soi Dog’s operating budget. We will do as much as we possibly can but your support is urgently needed to save the lives of these dogs! The Magic 1000 Club was formed to care for and feed the rescued dogs. The idea of the Magic 1000 Club is quite simple; if 1000 people will give a mere $1 a day the costs of caring for the dogs can be met. Many thanks to those of you who have joined as part of the Magic 1000. Currently there are around 300 members but another 700 people are urgently needed now! Will you join the Magic 1000 Club today?

At the time of writing I have just received news from staff and volunteers in the province of Sakon Nakhon that over 1,000 more dogs have been rescued from smugglers. These dogs have now been transferred to the Nakhon Phanom shelter which is already dreadfully overcrowded. This is an emergency situation – and these dogs need your immediate support! Only you can help these dogs – please become a regular monthly donor to the Magic 1000 – your gift of a dollar a day will feed and care for 4 dogs each month.

With the Governor’s fund for the Nakhon Phanom shelter now having been exhausted the requests for help are growing and we will be holding a meeting with the department of livestock chief in charge of all the shelters to discuss the way forward. This meeting will coincide with a large scale sterilization operation Soi Dog will be holding at the Khemmerat shelter, to sterilize 200 plus recently arrived dogs requiring sterilization.

Thanks to Soi Dog’s supporters sufficient funds have now been raised to complete the first of several additional shelters at Buriram which will allow 500 more dogs to be transferred there from Nakhon Phanom. With your support we hope to be in a position to finance another one soon. Ideally we would like to see 10 such shelters built here to house all the intercepted dogs in one location.

Thank you for your support and for taking the time to read my letter.

Best wishes,

John Dalley

P.S. Many thanks for joining the Magic 1000 club to help feed and care for the dogs rescued from the dog meat trade! There are now approximately 300 members in the Magic 1000 club helping to make sure that these dogs get sufficient food each month. In order to meet the staggering food bill more members are urgently need today! If you have not done so already please become a member today by clicking here.
