Dear Supporters
Your generosity in helping Soi Dog Foundation in the past has been truly wonderful. We could not have helped the animals here without it.
As you are aware in late 2007, SDF was asked to vacate the Government dog pound and find premises of its own. With the help of Dr. Suchon we were able to move to Mai Khao and build a shelter, clinic, and education center there at a cost of nearly 5 million Thai baht. The land was acquired on a 5 year lease for which we pay rent, which increases each year.
We were of course always conscious that not owning the land we could find ourselves again without premises at the end of the lease.
To this end we made approaches to the landlord regarding the purchase of the land:
The total area of the land is in excess of 10 rai (1 rai = 1600 square meters) and the asking price which our Thai board members advise is very fair, is 2 million Thai baht per rai. (Approximately 57,000 $US).
We believed that in the current economic climate there was no way we could raise the approximate 20 million Thai baht at this time. (Approximately 575,000 $US)
We therefore come to an agreement whereby SDF could buy part of the land (approximately 4.375 rai) at a negotiated price of 7.6 million Thai baht (approximately 220,000 $US). This section of the land comprises all of the main dog runs, the treatment block, and food store and laundry. The remainder of the land which comprises the staff accommodation, clinic, puppy and old and weak dogs run and education center could still be rented over an extended term for approximately 100,000 Thai Baht per year, with an option to buy at a negotiated price of 10 million thai baht within the first 2 years of the new lease.
Thanks once again to your amazing generosity the purchase of the first phase of the land has been completed and SDF now have a permanent home of its own and more importantly a permanent refuge for those animals most in need.
We have however made the decision to try and purchase the remainder if the land within the agreed time period. This is in addition to SDF extending the current facilities and expanding its sterilization and treatment program to other areas of Thailand.
It is BIG ask, but we remain confident that it can be achieved.

SDF continues to be run and managed by volunteers entirely at their own expense, although we currently employ 12 Thai staff including now 3 full time veterinarians, one of whom is sponsored by the Sarojin hotel Kao Lak, where we now hold twice monthly 3 day clinics. We also now hold field clinics even further afield in areas like Koh Lanta, and requests for help continue to come in from outside Phuket province. |
|
Our monthly expenditure is now approximately 500,000 Thai Baht (approximately 14,500 $US) which includes staff salaries, drugs and food. Sadly Thai companies do not have the same outlook as their Western counterparts, and do not donate or even discount food and drugs for which we have to pay the full market price. |
|
At the end of April we had sterilized over 23,000 animals and treated countless others. With the other animal charity on the island now having become a commercial clinic, the demands on us by poor Thais to help their animals has also increased. |
|
We never turn an animal in need away. |
|
I think it is fair to say that everybody who visits the shelter is moved and impressed by what has been achieved here. There are 250 dogs currently at the shelter, mainly permanent residents who have been the subject of often barbaric cruelty and abuse. |
|
We are aware of course of the current worldwide economic climate, which has hit Soi Dog Foundation as well, with the Thai baht currently being 30% higher in exchange rates with most Western currencies than it was 12 months ago, (with the exception of the $US), and appreciate it may be difficult for people to help at this time. If however you can help again it would be truly appreciated, and you would in effect be helping animals for years to come. |

On July 26th 2009, Environment Films hosted the films premier screening at Riverside Studios, London, UK. John Dalley, Manager of The Soi Dog Foundation happened to be on his annual visit to the UK at the time so was able to attend. It was a brilliant, with over 200 creative and passionate people there to watch the film - the cinema was so full that people had to stand at the back! Many of the guests have since sponsored dogs and offered other ways in which they can help. This was just the first of hopefully many screenings and we're confident that the 'Soi Dogs' documentary is going to go a long way to spread the message about the dogs and cats in Thailand that so desperately need our help. |
