The following are just some animal cruelty offences to take place recently and the sentencing handed down in each case:
April 2016: A chicken stall owner attacked Kao, a dog that was chained up, repeatedly hitting it with a metal bar. He then covered Kao’s head with a sack and used a knife to stab him in the neck and chest. Screaming in pain, Kao tried to hide under a nearby table but, being chained up, he could not escape. He died in a pool of blood. The accused was sentenced to just two months’ detention at Pathum Thani province detention centre, in Thanya Buri district.
May 2016: Cola, a puppy less than a year old, has both his front legs chopped off for chewing a pair of shoes, despite his owner already paying compensation to the owner of the shoes. The accused was sentenced to one month’s detention at at Pathum Thani province detention centre, in Thanya Buri district.
July 2017: A German man, in a completely unprovoked attack, picked up the resident much-loved dog Dum, in a bar on Koh Chang and slammed its body to the ground with such force that he broke its legs and caused such severe internal bleeding that the dog died. Dum’s crime had been to bark at the German’s dog. He was simply guarding his territory, completely normal dog behavior. The offender was fined 5,000 THB and sentenced to 2 years’ imprisonment suspended for one year (no custodial sentence).
September 2017: A drunk entered a temple and beat to death Jaw Toa, a dog that was chained up in the grounds and unable to escape. The dog had a very sweet nature and was liked by all the other monks, being the abbot’s pet. The offender was fined 5,000 THB and sentenced to 6 months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years (no custodial sentence).
