Training Animal Rescue Cambodia

A Soi Dog veterinarian trains a vet from Animal Rescue Cambodia

In August 2017, Soi Dog Foundation hosted two staff members from our partners Animal Rescue Cambodia at our shelter on the island of Phuket, Thailand.

Rath is a shelter assistant and Monich is a veterinary assistant at Animal Rescue Cambodia (ARC), Soi Dog’s first international partner rescue, based in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. For two weeks, they underwent intensive training to add to and improve their knowledge of shelter medicine and animal handling.

During their time at the Soi Dog Foundation shelter, they trained with Soi Dog veterinarians to learn about shelter protocols, running spay/neuter clinics, and delivering high quality medical care to cats and dogs. They also visited our Community Outreach team who work closely with animal feeders and carers at temples and elsewhere around the island. It is hoped this visit will provide ARC with valuable insights for their Pagoda Ambassador Programme (PAP). This programme aims to improve the care of pagoda (temple) animals through spaying and neutering, feeding, and the provision of medical care involving the monks and other locals living at the pagodas of Phnom Penh.

Speaking at the end of their visit, Rach and Monich said the most valuable lessons learnt were the pre/post-operative sterilisation procedures, techniques for inserting endotracheal tubes in sedated dogs, administering injections, and managing disease outbreaks through contamination control. Next steps, with assistance from Soi Dog Foundation, include employing an on-site veterinarian at ARC's facility in Cambodia.

Through our programme of partnership and collaboration, and with your support, Soi Dog Foundation and Animal Rescue Cambodia look forward to working together to improve the lives of suffering animals in Cambodia. Thank you for making this possible.
