Peter Fitzgerald
Peter is a retired professor, and a long-time supporter of animal rescue. He is a specialist in domestic and international commercial law, with an additional interest in international animal law. Qualified to practice both in the U.S. and in the U.K., Peter lectured on international animal law at the Jeanne Marchig International Centre for Animal Welfare at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Veterinary Studies; the Scottish Agricultural College; and the Cambridge University Veterinary School’s Centre for Animal Welfare and Anthrozoology; as well as teaching various subjects at several U.S. and foreign law schools. He has also written several books and numerous articles on international economic law, and on animal law.
Prior to entering academia, Peter was a member of the IBM Corporate Legal Department with assignments at a number of locations in the U.S. and abroad. This included serving as Counsel to IBM’s Export Regulation Office in Washington, D.C., with responsibility for the company’s worldwide export policy, licensing, and compliance operations. He also helped develop training programs and conducted workshops on the regulation of international trade and corporate compliance for multinational audiences in thirteen countries on five continents.
Over the years Peter and his wife have adopted eight dogs, including three international rescues, and fostered another half-dozen or so. They also train the dogs they adopt to be therapy animals, and conduct visits to local schools, libraries, and medical facilities.
