Adopting a cat is not something to be undertaken lightly.

Cats can live as long as 15 years, sometimes longer, and Soi Dog Foundation wants to ensure that any cats it places for adoption go to people who will provide them with an appropriate, clean, safe, family environment, will feed them properly, take care of them when they are sick, and will – above all – give them love until the end of their days.

Here are some questions you may have, with links to the answers.

Do we have to go to the Soi Dog Foundation shelter to choose a cat or can I choose one that is displayed on the website?

How do we know the cat I choose will be right for me?

Do you deliver the cat to our home?

Are the cats house-trained?

Can I get a little kitten from Soi Dog Foundation?

Do you have pedigree cats for adoption?

How much must we pay to adopt from Soi Dog Foundation?

If you decide you would like to adopt one of our cats, we urge you to make an appointment before you come, so that you can meet with someone from our Adoptions team. Call 076 681 029 or email us at adoptions@soidog.org

Do we have to go to the Soi Dog Foundation to choose a cat, or can I choose one that is displayed on the website?

If you live in Phuket or nearby you should come to the Soi Dog shelter to choose your cat. Even if you live further away it is a good idea but we know that’s not always possible. So please contact our Adoptions team and they will guide you through the process.

If you are overseas and interested in adopting from our shelter, please see this page for information on costs and how transportation is arranged.

How do we know the cat I choose will be right for me?

To help ensure that the cat you adopt suits you, and you suit the cat, we may ask you a number of questions. For example:

  • Do you have lots of time to entertain an energetic kitten?
  • Or are you looking for an older, calm cat to cuddle up to?
  • Do you have an outdoor space that your cat can explore safely? Or is your home big enough for an indoor-only cat?
  • Is the boundary of your garden strong and high enough to keep dogs out?
  • Do you already have a pet? If so, what kind of temperament does your existing pet have? If you have a dog, how is your dog with cats?
  • Do you have young children?
  • If you are an expatriate living in Thailand, do you have plans to return to your home country in the future? Some countries have very strict laws that make importing pets from Thailand very costly and difficult.

If you already have a pet and/or small children, please bring them with you when you come to choose your cat. Photos of your home and garden will also be helpful.

If you cannot visit us to choose your cat, our Adoptions team will contact you with similar questions.

Do you deliver the cat to our home?

If your home is in Phuket or nearby, and the cat is not ready to travel home with you at the end of your first visit, we will let you know when you should return to pick it up.

If you live in Thailand but far from Phuket, we can arrange to deliver your cat by air to the airport nearest to your home. We will also organise the crate for the cat to travel in.

The time we spend organising this is given free of charge, but please understand that you will have to pay for the flight and the travel crate.

If you are overseas and interested in adopting from our shelter, please see this page for information on costs and how transportation is arranged.

Are the cats house-trained?

All of Soi Dog Foundation’s animals are sterilised and fully vaccinated. Cats are generally very clean animals and all of the cats at the Soi Dog shelter are accustomed to using a litter tray.

Can I get a little kitten from Soi Dog Foundation?

We do not usually make very small kittens available for adoption. This is because young kittens need to drink their mothers’ milk until they are weaned. Without this, their immune system may not be fully developed and they will be more likely to get sick.

(This is also why you should never buy young kittens from a pet shop, no matter how cute they are.)

As a result, almost all the cats we offer for adoption are at least six months old.

Do you have pedigree cats for adoption?

Some of Soi Dog Foundation’s rescue animals are pedigree cats but most are mixed-breed. When rescuing animals we make no distinction. But as the Thai word soi means alley or street, the animals rescued by Soi Dog are usually from the streets, where pedigree cats are not that common.

You should know that there is good evidence that mixed-breed cats are generally more intelligent than pure-breds, are healthier, and often live longer.

We have over one hundred cats in need of homes. To see just some of them, please see this page

How much must we pay to adopt from Soi Dog Foundation?

All adoptions are free – we are delighted to see our rescue cats go to good, loving homes. If you live in Phuket, you can collect your new family member from the shelter as soon as he or she is ready to leave.

(We need to make final medical checks before handing over the animal of your choice. We try to do it on the same day but that’s not always possible.)

Your only cost will be the cost of getting your pet to your home.

If you would like to make a donation to help rescue more cats in need, we would welcome your kind support.
